Sean's Birthday Party!

I feel really bad because I really didn't get too many pictures of Sean's birthday party. I did get some of him blowing out the candle and his cupcakes. First he wanted a cake with SpongeBob, Stormtroopers and Indiana Jones. I wasn't sure how I was going to pull that one off! Another Mom suggested that I take a few action figures and pop them on the cake. You know what, she was probably right, he would have loved it! But then a few days before his party he decided that he wanted cupcakes. He say the candy toppers at the party supply store when we went to get his plates. Problem solved and one birthday boy happy!

We had a small attendance which was okay. A lot of our friends vacation the end of August, you would think that I would have learned five years later! Maybe next year I will remember and we will have his party earlier in the summer! Sean had a great time, and that is all that matters! His real birthday is on the 19th!

Drenched at Lincoln Financial Field!

Brian, Brian Jr., my Mom, and I went to the Eagles game tonight. It was just a pre-season game, but we were really excited anyway. Part of the excitement was due to the fact that we had passes to go down on the sidelines of the field to watch warm-ups! It was nothing short of amazing to be a matter of feet from the players. The stats on TV seen impressive but I could have never imagined the size of some of them! Brian knows one of the coaches, so Brian Jr. walked away with a coaches hat and a real practice ball! It has the NFL logo and is even stamped with EAGLES! He is still trying to recover from that! In a good way. He went to bed with the football tonight! And I am sure he won't let it out of his sight for many nights to come!

After we watched the warm-ups we went to our seats. We were in the end zone - five rows from the field!!! We had a great view and were all so excited to watch the game! But, part way through the first quarter it started to rain. At first it wasn't too bad, but then we saw lightning everywhere. The game was postponed for severe weather and everyone had to leave the open seating area. I am glad the weather never got more severe because it took forever to file out to safety! We got a snack and waited around about an hour.

They did start the game again just as we were leaving but by then it was pouring. Cats and dogs pouring. Wiping the water off your face to see pouring. Since we had no foul weather gear, we decided to leave and hopefully make it back to another game this season! Of course, as soon as we got home the rain ended. And to top it all off, the Eagles came back to win with 24 points in the end of the fourth quarter! And the end zone where they scored those points is the end zone we were sitting in. We would have probably been on TV - numerous times! Oh well!

First Party!

I had my first jewelry party tonight at my college friend Cynthia's house! It was a great success and I had a lot of fun! It was so great to see her - and her family! Especially her four month old daughter! I totally monopolized the holding time with her - I cannot wait! We even came home with some pink things! Thanks Cynthia!

I decided to go with a beach theme on my table - shells and stones and starfish etc. I think it looked really nice and it was easy for people to see!

PIP #5!

We went to Trenton today to finish the last of our three sets of Parents In Process classes (PIP)! We were in the class with only one other couple and got to ask the social worker lots of questions. It was great to have so much time with her. The class was more about the adjustments after we bring our daughter home - attachment and bonding, strange behaviors, grieving, food issues etc. I also remembered my camera this time so that I could have pictures for her scrap book - and for the blog!

Looking for ligthning bugs!

I love this picture, there is something so cute about pictures from behind. The boys are all huddled together looking for lightning bugs. I am not sure Justin knows what he is looking for, but he sure loves doing what his brothers are doing! I know he is so proud and happy to be included in whatever they are doing! Big brothers are great - most of the time! And so are little brothers - most of the time!

The Climber

My monkey, aka Justin, has become a proficient climber. He has long been able to get up onto the couch and now he has figured out that from the couch he can get onto the end tables! His other new trick is getting up in a dining room chair and from there up onto the table! He is most excited about getting up on the table. He sees all the stuff up there day after day, and no one lets him touch it! He was laughing and screeching like crazy the first time he got his hands on the things up on the table! We are in so much trouble! If we come to visit, move your valuables to the top of the fridge. He hasn't figured that one out - yet!

Popsicle Madness

Popsicles are a big hit around here! They are especially a favorite of Sean since he cannot have ice cream due to his milk allergy. Justin hasn't had his own yet, but loves to steal licks from his brothers! Sometimes they do not share with him fast enough for his liking and he attacks them! If only they didn't drip all over everything!!!

Brian chose orange
Justin wanted orange!
Yum!
more, Brian, more!

Prison Time

We visited the Burlington County Prison today. Don't worry no one got arrested and there were no real prisoners. They prison has not been in use since November of 1965! It was built in 1811, and has changed very little since then. The stone structure, large front door, hinges, and lock are original. The cell doors inside are original and many were built into place. The prison was not fool-proof and many escapes were made over the years - mostly through the roof and over the stone wall in the yard. The prison was built to house about 40 inmates, but there were sometimes over 100 there! When there were too many prisoners for the cells, the lined the halls with bunks!

The prison had different kinds of cells and areas for the different kinds of crimes. Those that owed debts were allowed to walk around the prison and were housed in common rooms. There was a maximum security area was in the center of the top floor to prevent escape through digging. This cell had only one high, small window, no fireplace, an an iron ring in the center of the floor to chain the prisoner to. The windows varied in size depending on the crime, maximum security windows were 28 X 39, solitary confinement cells were 20 X 16, and the debtors cells were 35 X 50!

There were a few rooms where the "keeper" or warden and his family stayed. Yes, his wife and children lived in the jail! His wife was expected to care for the female inmates. There was a workshop in the basement to help reform the prisoners and teach them a trade. There was a room where the prisoners ate and through that room, there was access to the exercise yard.

The yard had a stone wall that was 20 feet high. There were shackles to detain unruly prisoners. There was an area for the inmates to grow small gardens and also a well for water because the prison originally had no running water. In the yard, there was also an area for the gallows. The gallows were taken apart and stored in between hangings.

Up until 1928, the prisoners had to prepare their own meals. They usually got one main meal a day of meat and veggies, the other two meals were cooked cereals or grains. They could drink water, cider, or milk. There was a supply storage area near the kitchen and also large tubs for washing clothes and bathing.

Graffiti lined some of the walls and has been preserved for many years. There were drawings of people, crosses, calenders with days marked off, and many different names. Prisoners sold stolen supplies on the "black market." Some hid their shoes before being arrested so that they could get new ones and then sell them when they got out.

The thing that I find most amazing is that mothers who were jailed and had young kids and even nursing mothers, were imprisoned with their children! Sometimes whole families were put in jail together!

Albert DeSalvo, the "Boston Strangler", he stayed a few nights in this prison and was later released to military authorities because he was a soldier stationed at Fort Dix in NJ.
